Caro Mantke

What’s your definition of beauty?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Which years are the magazines you take the portraits to create the collages from?
Late 90s till now.

Where does your inspiration come from?
Dadaism, Surrealism and irony.

What’s the connection between your creations and the aesthetics? There’s a strong contrast between perfection and imperfection. While you mix beautifully composed pieces which creates bizarre portraits.
First of all I wanted to make something ugly out of something apparently beautiful. Like a persiflage of all that beautiful faces displayed everywhere. But as I do it as a skilled designer with an eye for aesthetic rules and use of forms the pieces become beautiful again as perfect compositions, although they show bizarre portraits. I like that ambiguity.
