What would you get if you mix teenage Led Zeppelin love, Herman Hesse, Clark Gable, Hans Bellmer and a real dose of ’Frenchness’. You’d get FAIRE. Faire means ’to do’ in French. And they DO. It started over 10 years ago as a creative outlet. Today the Gaule wave shakes both ears and eyes with throbbing French music.” The trio makes music, videos, clothes”and shit”!
For how long have you been making music together?
10 years now. We’ve had all kinds of bands together, and with lots of different people. Until we combined everything in one for FAIRE, just the three of us.
How did you meet?
In high school, through love of Led Zeppelin and creating stuff mostly. Having a shared passion and dedication.
Who is Marie-Louise?
Marie Louise is Romain’s grandmother. But also the girl everyone remembers from last summer.
Your music is rather psychedelic instrumental and neopunk. How would you describe it yourselves, without using adjectives?
We call it Gaule Wave. A wave of throbbing French music.
Who did you grow up listening to? Anyone in common?
I guess it goes from a lot of music from the 60s and 70s and world music to a lot of Gainsbourg and Eminem. We love and are influenced by all styles of music but we evolved together as teenagers exploring through punk, rock n roll, electronic or psychedelic music, anything with a powerful sound.
Sure, we love Herman Hesse, Clark Gable and Hans Bellmer.
What do you ’Do’ besides music?
FAIRE means « to Do » in French and the band started as a creative outlet, whatever the media. We make clothes, and shit.
I love your music videos. Describe the process of combining the visual videos with your music?
All our first videos we directed and edited ourselves, so we experimented with psychedelic effects and giving colorful textures to whatever we had filmed. And since the project actually became a band we’ve been collaborating with lots of different people. It is hard to share a vision of your music, but with the right people it works.
I saw your gig at the Chateau Sonic Festival - you really do rock the stage! What do you usually do before entering the stage? A performance like that must require some kind of foreplay, no?
Usually we like to take a bath together, relax. But mostly we like to give out energy physically on stage, share it with the crowd.
Gaule Wave pour tous!
What is going on right now?
Right now we’re in Los Angeles to write music, film videos and escape the french winter. And next week we’re going to Austin for SXSW!
What comes next is a lot FAIRE, every which way. And maybe a song in Italian, with an orchestra.
