Hassan Kurbanbaev is a freelance photographer based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Kurbanabaev’s photography in his “Autoportrait series” was selected as one of the best fine art photographs by PhotoVogue. The series is based on individuality and personalities, particularly the performative aspects of them. Kurbanbaev asks us, through these series, what really makes individuals within the human race and how much of it is a role we are fulfilling or performing for spectatorship. His work in the series, through the literal motif of wearing one’s personality as clothes, displays how our bodies are governed by the environment and, thus, our identity. Through bright colours and the whimsical tone his photos carry, the photographer intends to create a more lighthearted aspect of the question and pokes fun at the idea of asking and hoping for an easy answer.
