There is a particular kind of courage in stillness. FIBER Festival 2026, running 28 to 31 May across nine venues in Amsterdam, takes that idea seriously, gathering artists, musicians, technologists and thinkers under the theme Fragile Forces.
The title resists easy reading. Fragility here is not weakness dressed up in theory. It is the actual condition of listening, of making, of trying to sustain something meaningful in a world that rewards volume and speed. Last year FIBER looked outward, toward wildness and acceleration. This year the festival turns inward, asking what forms of resistance live in the quiet, in the barely audible, in things that hold without hardening.
The music programme reflects that tension precisely. Thursday opens at murmur with Trois-Quarts Taxi System and Xenia Reaper drawing the audience into something closer to a shared physical state than a conventional concert. Friday brings Kara-Lis Coverdale to Orgelpark, a composer whose relationship with the organ is as much philosophical as it is sonic. The weekend escalates: a sprawling club night at Garage Noord, then a multi-room programme at TILLATEC with mesocosm, Slowfoam, eoobe and Timedance's Batu closing things out in the early hours. The festival ends Sunday at BIMHUIS, where Abdullah Miniawy Trio and KUNTARI close the weekend with the kind of performance that justifies the whole enterprise, one grounded in emotional weight and rhythmic force in equal measure.
The symposium runs alongside all of this, with Geert Lovink, Mindy Seu, Bint Mbareh and others bringing the same seriousness to language that the musicians bring to sound.
FIBER has always understood that culture worth paying attention to rarely announces itself loudly. Eleven editions in, that instinct looks less like a curatorial position and more like a fact.
Nine venues. Four days. One very good reason to be in Amsterdam at the end of May.
