Ken Nakajima: Prometheus Rising - Opera by Milo Mckinnon & Mujuice

  • Raleigh Chapel, East London (map)

"Prometheus Rising" arrives at Raleigh Chapel this May, a new opera directed by Ken Nakajima with music by Milo Mckinnon and Mujuice. The production takes place at the newly opened East London venue, utilizing its architecture for immersive staging.

Ken Nakajima brings experience from previous work with Oklou, Royal Court Theatre, and Tate Modern. His direction positions the opera as immersive rather than traditional proscenium presentation, treating the Raleigh Chapel space as active component rather than neutral container. The venue opened recently and already programs work that requires particular spatial relationships between performers and audience.

Milo Mckinnon and Mujuice composed the score. Their collaboration combines different approaches to electronic and contemporary composition, creating sonic territory that operates between experimental music and operatic form. The partnership suggests work that engages opera's conventions while bringing electronic production methods and contemporary sound design into the format.

The title references the Prometheus myth, though what interpretation or treatment the opera offers remains to be seen. Prometheus stories deal with transgression, stolen knowledge, punishment, and the costs of giving humanity what it cannot handle. The myth allows multiple readings: revolutionary hero, reckless thief, martyr, fool. Which version this opera pursues or whether it proposes something else entirely will emerge through the production itself.

Raleigh Chapel's recent opening positions it as East London venue interested in ambitious projects that require specific spatial conditions. The location suggests audience willing to travel for work that cannot happen in standard theater spaces. The immersive designation indicates staging that breaks conventional audience-performer separation, creating different proximity and participation dynamics.
