Artist and photographer Nicolas Colón was born in 1982 in San Francisco, California. Colón’s practice is heavily abstract expressionist, with his photography taking on a similar tone. The artist’s photography literally places him within the photo, perhaps offering a contemporary version ofartists including themselves in their paintings (such as “Las Meninas”). Including his own image in the photography emphasizes the artistic intent of the work and blurs both the medium and genres of the original work—is it a self-portrait or a painting or a photographic piece of work?
Colón received his BFA in Sculpture/Media Art at California College of the Arts. His work has been exhibited in various cities such as Paris, Mexico City, Copenhagen, and New York. He is currently based in Mexico City.
