Shueh traces the phrase to her own temperament and to her Asian parents, who taught her that too much celebration might tempt fate. Staying a little guarded, she grew up believing, could bring more luck.
Her memories pull in opposite directions. She grew up in Asia with parents fascinated by European royal gardens and courtly aesthetics. She spent three years at a devout Christian school, surrounded by prayers and crosses, while holding little faith of her own.
At home there was an old, worn sofa where she and her siblings made their memories. Saturday afternoons were spent together in the bathtub, and laundry piled up on the balcony like mountains.
Shueh keeps all of these fragments, and she credits their mixture for a creative world that is hers alone. Her work comes from the spaces in between: Asia and Europe, faith and doubt, the beauty of everyday life.
